Who is this guy?

Jazz trumpeter Dr. E. Ron Horton has been flying under the radar for eighteen years, but flying nonetheless.  As a young musician Horton began his professional career playing with big bands and R&B acts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  Soon after graduating with a degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas he used his musical skills to become a full time member of one of the United States Air Force Field Bands.  During the day Horton represented his country in uniform, playing for the public, military members and their families, foreign dignitaries, and high level government officials while touring throughout Texas, the Southwestern United States, and even South America.  At night he was a part of San Antonio's Salsa y Merengue music scene.  Did he learn how to dance...no, but this gave him a four year apprenticeship in some of the most exciting music in the world.

After completing his enlistment in the Air Force he found himself in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he met Nathan Davis and Roger Humphries. Both men would join a long list of mentors who would have a major influence on the direction his career would take.  Within a matter of weeks of arriving in town he would become a member of the Roger Humphries Big Band for the next four years.  While working as with Humphries and countless other music groups in Western Pennsylvania, he was also earning his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh with Nathan Davis. From 2006 to 2012 Horton would live in Jonesboro, Arkansas teaching at Arkansas State University as well as touring and recording with the New Orleans Jazz Ramblers.  Horton currently resides in Pittsburgh and rejoined Humphries, this time as the jazz trumpet soloist in the RH Factor quintet.  He is also a member of the acclaimed Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra.

Doc Horton's most recent project, Outlet, is a fusion of all the music styles that make you dance funneled through a horn augmented with electronics.  The only thing that doesn't move with the beat at his shows are the chairs.  Words can't describe it, you'll have to check it out for yourself.
